Scores have been killed and several houses destroyed in a multiple expolision that rocked Maiduguri, Borno State capital yesterday, Tuesday, October 13. It was gathered that the incident occurred in the Ajilari Cross area of the city. Attacks on Ajilari Cross, which have occurred three times in one month, have claimed over 250 residents.
Details on the cause of the blasts is yet be known, but eyewitnesses said it happened at quick intervals from 8:10 pm.
“We are all confused and people are running helter-skelter,” Bashir Mohammed, whose house is near the scene of the blasts, told AFP.
A cleric identified as, Sheriff Ahmad, also a resident said;“Many people have been killed. I don’t know how many and I don’t think anyone can tell you now.”
Similarly, a nurse, Hafsat Sani, at the nearby Umaru Shehu Hospital, said; “there are many houses around the area and the blasts have affected many of them.”
The Red Cross and officials from Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have been mobilised to control the situation.
A resident Mallam Goni Usman told DAILY POST that;
“We are all confused and people are running helter-skelter. Many people have been killed. I don’t know how many as at the time we left but we called some people this morning who told us that they have carried 20 corpses to the state specialist hospital and many other inured ones to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for treatment.”
He said, the rumor making the rounds in the area before the explosion was that the Boko Haram terrorists were training their people in Sambisa Forest.
“We wonder whether what we have been hearing from the military is correct, because if they are fighting, why are these people regrouping.
“Last Sallah, they prayed in the Sambisa and even twitted photos and on Facebook. Why is government failing us?” He queried.
