We all know tips and tricks for washing different parts of our body but what about washing the vagina? Most women are taught early on to cleanse their lady parts on a daily basis with strong soap or use “feminine hygiene” sprays, but this can actually do more harm than good.
Every woman deserves to feel clean and confident down there but what are you doing to achieve that. Are you doing too much or maybe too little? Misguided information on how to clean your vagina could leave you with itchy skin and a full-on yeast infection.
Here’s how to cleanse your vagina to keep it happy, healthy, and feeling fresh.
Occasional washing of your vagina is necessary and in most, water is all you need on the outer area of your genitals. So if you’re already in the shower, use your hand or a washcloth to gently clean the area with water.
While the external part (a.k.a. the vulva) needs some tender, loving, care, the internal portion (a.k.a. the vagina) does a pretty good job of taking care of itself. The vagina has a really great mechanism within it to keep it clean. Your vagina needs you to just leave it as it can clean itself.
Keep your washcloth from touching your vaginal area after you’ve washed your anus. Doing this will ensure that you don’t drag rectal germs toward your vaginal area. These germs can cause you to get urinary tract infections.
Using harsh cleansers can upset the ph level of the vagina, leading to infection, irritation, and even bad smells.
If you feel the need to use soap, unscented ones are better. Also, make sure to thoroughly rinse it with warm water so that no traces of soap are left behind. Soap left inside the vagina can cause irritation.
If you clean the vagina too much, you could be disrupting the delicate balance of your vaginal area. Over-cleansing can cause itching, dryness, discharge changes, and yeast infections.
Do not douche. Douching with chemicals that are supposed to make your vagina smell like a field of flowers actually ends up having quite the opposite effect. They wash out all the healthy bacteria that helps your vagina stay clean and infection-free. The chemicals left behind by douches can cause irritation and even burning, and the same goes for feminine sprays. If you keep your vagina healthy using other methods, there will be no need to try to make it smell different.
One wonderful thing about the vagina is that it’s physiologically built to take care of itself, so the less you do to it, the better. The vagina actually stays quite clean on its own without the help of outside cleansers.
