Lagos State Government has warned residents not to patronise or encourage street trading, as buyers and sellers would be liable to prosecution under the state Street Trading Law. The state also denied the involvement of Kick Against Indiscipline , KAI, in the death of a trader, as reported by a section of the media. Public Affairs Department in the Ministry of Environment in a statement by Mr Fola Adeyemi, said: “By the orientation of the Brigade, KAI personnel were not trained to kill or maim, but to enforce sanitation laws with civility. “The fact of the matter is that a team of KAI officials were on routine monitoring exercise at Ikoyi area of the state and immediately some street traders sighted them, they took to their heels and in the process one of them ran into oncoming vehicle and was knocked down. “It was rather unfortunate that the unidentified trader was reported dead, but it must be emphasized that none of the KAI official was contributory or pushed the trader to death, as it was just the sight of this team that scared the traders and in the fear of being apprehended for street trading, which is now an offense in the state, he eventually ran into an oncoming vehicle.”
