Ms Jumoke Akindele from Okitipupa Constituency 2 in the Southern Senatorial District of Ondo State has emerged as the new speaker of the Ondo state of Assembly. Akindele emerged as the first female Speaker of the state by polling a total of 13 votes, defeating two other contestants, who are both men.
The two contestants, Oyebo Aladetan from Ilaje Constituency 2 polled 9 votes, and Soji Akinkuolie had no vote.
Akindele, who is a first timer in the House is a legal practitioner and hails from Okitipupa in Okitipupa Local Government area of the State.
The Deputy Speaker, Emiola Dare from Akoko South West Constituency, who has been acting as Speaker, presided over the election.
In her acceptance speech, Hon. Akindele appreciated the Labour Party; the State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko; members of the House and the people of the state.
She promised to be diligent, just and committed to the cause of peace, harmony and development of the state.
The swearing-in ceremony for the new Speaker comes after the demise of the erstwhile Speaker, Samuel Adesina in February 2014.
