Ebola Survivors Lose Jobs,Accommodation + Lagos Govt To Prosecute Cases Of Stigmatization!

Lagos State is warning against the stigmatisation of Ebola Survivors, stating that many of them are beingevicted or fired after being given a clean bill of health.The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, said on Tuesday during a press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, that .......


“The social problem being faced by discharged cases has been reported to the government.This ranges from stigmatisation, eviction from their accommodation, being asked to stay away from work and termination of employment.We have had cases of employers just terminating the employment of their workers who were just mere contacts, not even suspected cases.
We believe this is unfair and we feel this impedes on their fundamental human rights.
“Now, the Ministry of Justice will take the matter up. Anybody, whether a discharged patient or a contact followed up, who feels stigmatised, can petition the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General of Lagos State and the government will

Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, said at a press conference yesterday, that the state Ministry of Justice has been notified to pick up any case of stigmatization, adding that stigmatization can make some persons believed to have contracted the disease not to come forward for treatment.

"Stigmatization may further make contacts and suspects to go underground. This may bring about the reversal of the gains we have already made; because such contacts and suspects may not come out and if they don’t come out, they jeopardize the life of those they come in contact with, including their families. We want to emphasize that the Ministry of Justice will take up any case of stigmatization. Anybody, either a discharged patient or a contact being followed up, who feels any form of stigmatization, should petition the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney-General and we will take it up from there."
